These brightly coloured, slow-moving insects are ideal feeders for all sizes of insect-eating reptiles and amphibians due to their drastic growth from a few millimetres in length as hatchlings to several centimetres in length as adults. The juvenile locusts are commonly referred to as "hoppers".
